How to check if your Meta Pixel is working, including on Shopify and WooCommerce
Updated October 23, 2026
To check if your Meta Pixel is working, you need two answers: does the pixel fire in the browser, and does Meta receive those events with the right data? Meta gives you three free tools for this. Here's what each one is for, what to look for from the product page to Purchase, why a pixel can show nothing at all, and where to look on Shopify and WooCommerce.
Three ways to check if your Meta Pixel is working
They answer different questions, so it's worth using more than one.
- Meta Ads Data Advisor, formerly Meta Pixel Helper: a browser extension that shows which pixel events fire on the page you're on, with their parameters. Our Data Advisor guide covers installing it.
- Test events in Events Manager: shows the events Meta actually receives from your site while you browse it.
- The Diagnostics tab in Events Manager: lists errors and warnings Meta has found in your event setup, such as a missing currency or duplicate events.
Watch events fire with Meta Ads Data Advisor
- Open your store and turn off your ad blocker for that site. Meta's own checklist asks for this, because ad blockers stop the extension from seeing the pixel.
- Look at the extension icon. A badge means a pixel was found, and the number is how many events fired on the page. No badge means no Meta Pixel is installed on that page.
- Click the icon to open the side panel. Each pixel shows as Active, Warning or Inactive, and each event lists details such as content IDs, value and currency.
- Do the action you want to track, for example add a product to the cart to test AddToCart, and confirm the event shows up without errors.
- Turn on Show all events to keep a log across pages, so product, cart and checkout can be checked in one session.
- Some button-click events and custom conversions may not appear even when they're sent. Meta points to Test events for those.
Confirm Meta receives them in Test events
- In Events Manager, click Data sources in the left menu, select your data source by name and ID, then click Test events.
- In the browser events section (website events if you selected a dataset), enter your site URL and click Open website.
- Browse the store in that window. Your events appear in the Test events tab as you go, but only while the Test events page stays open.
- Use the filter icon to show the URL and parameters for each event, or to surface errors and warnings.
- Click Clear activity when you're done. Test activity still shows in Events Manager, Ads Reporting and audience results, and stays in the tab for 24 hours unless you clear it.
- Meta says data can take 30 minutes or more to appear in your analytics after you set up an event, so use Test events instead of waiting for the numbers.
Read the Diagnostics tab
Go to Events Manager, click Data sources, choose your data source and open Diagnostics. A red icon next to a data source means it has critical issues. Critical issues (red) should be fixed first; warnings (yellow) are lower priority. Issues found in the last 24 hours sit under Active, and each one comes with steps to fix it. Messages you're likely to meet on a store include:
- Missing or invalid currency code: currency must be a three-letter ISO code such as USD or GBP.
- Missing or invalid price in value parameter: value must be a number of zero or more, with no letters, currency symbols or commas.
- Event name mismatch: event names are case-sensitive, so purchase doesn't count as Purchase.
- Multiple events on an action, or redundant purchase events: more than one event per visitor action, or four or more Purchase events for a single order.
- Duplicate events detected: the same event is logged by your site's code and again as an automatic event.
- New domain sending data, and event parameters blocked because they may break the Meta Business Tools Terms.
What to look for along the purchase path
Walk the path a customer takes and check each event as it arrives. Meta lists value, currency and content_ids among the parameters for the shopping events below. Purchase is the one where value and currency are required.
- PageView: the base code sends it each time the pixel loads, so you should see it on every page.
- ViewContent: on product pages, with content_ids, content_type, contents, value and currency. Advantage+ catalog ads need content_ids or contents.
- AddToCart: when a product goes into the cart, with the same set of parameters.
- InitiateCheckout: when the visitor enters checkout. Meta also lists num_items for this event.
- Purchase: once per completed order, on the thank-you or confirmation page, with a value that matches the order and the right currency.
- Watch for one action producing the same event twice. Diagnostics reports that as multiple events on an action, and it inflates your numbers.
Why a pixel shows nothing
- An ad blocker or privacy tool in your own browser. Turn it off for your store while you test.
- No consent yet. On Shopify, in markets that require consent, pixels run only after the visitor gives the permissions the pixel needs, and new pixels need Marketing and Analytics permission by default. Accept the cookie banner before you test.
- The base code is missing or misplaced. Meta says it belongs in the head of every page. Search the page source for fbq or Meta Pixel Code, especially after a theme change or redesign.
- You're looking at a different data source. Test events and Diagnostics work on the data source you selected, so check its name and ID against the pixel your store uses.
- A domain allow or block list in Traffic permissions is blocking your own domain.
Shopify and WooCommerce checks
- Shopify: if you connected Meta through the Facebook & Instagram sales channel, go to Sales channels, Facebook & Instagram, Settings, Data sharing settings. Check that customer data sharing is on, which level is chosen (Standard, Enhanced or Maximum) and which pixel is connected. Meta recommends Enhanced or Maximum.
- Enhanced and Maximum add the Conversions API, which sends purchase events from server to server, which Shopify says browser ad blockers don't affect. Those server events won't show in Data Advisor.
- Shopify's own test: go to Settings, Customer events, open the more options menu next to the app pixel and click Test to open the Shopify Pixel Helper. A green dot means the event was handled, a red dot means an error. If it says Pixel is awaiting consent, accept the cookie banner or click Give consent to continue test. To test the thank-you page, place a test order.
- If you once pasted pixel code into theme.liquid, remove it after connecting the app. Shopify warns that a second pixel can cause duplicate or incorrect data. See our guide to adding a Meta Pixel to Shopify.
- WooCommerce: Meta's plugin is now called Meta for WooCommerce, formerly Facebook for WooCommerce. Its settings are under Marketing, then Facebook, in your WordPress dashboard.
- If WooCommerce events don't fire and you use a caching plugin, its optimization settings can conflict with the pixel code. WooCommerce's docs say the fix is to turn off JavaScript grouping.
- Pixel Audit checks the storefront for you: it opens your store from our servers in a real browser, goes through home, product, cart and checkout, and reports missing, duplicate or wrong Meta events and parameters. It doesn't place orders or see Conversions API events, so Purchase still needs a test order.
Check home, product, cart and checkout events in one run, without installing anything.
Check my Meta PixelQuestions
- How do I know if my Meta Pixel is working?
- Open your site with Meta Ads Data Advisor running and check that PageView and your other events fire. Then open Test events in Events Manager to confirm Meta receives them, and look at the Diagnostics tab for errors.
- Why does my Meta Pixel show no activity?
- Start with your own browser: turn off ad blockers, accept the cookie banner and reload. If there's still nothing, the base code may be missing from the page, or you may be looking at a different data source in Events Manager.
- How do I check the Facebook pixel on Shopify?
- In Shopify, go to Settings, Customer events, open the menu next to the app pixel and click Test to open the Shopify Pixel Helper. Then confirm in Test events in Events Manager that Meta receives the same events.
- How long do pixel events take to show in Events Manager?
- Test events shows them while you browse. Meta says data can take 30 minutes or more to appear in your analytics after you set up an event.
- Can I test the Purchase event without buying anything?
- Not fully. Purchase fires after a completed order, on the thank-you page, so you need to place an order. On Shopify, a test order lets you check the thank-you page.
