TikTok Pixel not working? How to test it and fix the common errors
Updated October 23, 2026
If your TikTok Pixel is not working, TikTok's own tools can usually show you where it breaks: in the pixel code, in an event, or in a parameter. This guide covers how to test the pixel with TikTok Pixel Helper and Events Manager, what the common errors mean (including missing value and currency), the event names TikTok changed in 2025, and what to check on Shopify.
TikTok Pixel not working? Start with Pixel Helper
- TikTok Pixel Helper is TikTok's Chrome extension for checking a pixel. Install the latest version from the Chrome Web Store.
- Turn off your ad blocker for your store first. TikTok notes that browser ad blockers can stop the pixel from collecting data.
- Open your store and click through it the way a customer would: a product page, add to cart, then checkout. Pixel Helper shows whether your pixel and its events fire on each page.
- It checks three levels, the pixel, the event and the parameters, and gives a suggested fix for each problem it finds.
What the Pixel Helper errors mean
These are the errors TikTok documents for Pixel Helper, grouped by level. Event and parameter errors apply to pixels set up with Custom Code.
- Pixel code missing from the header: put the base code as early on the page as you can, ideally inside the head section.
- Invalid pixel ID: copy the correct ID from Events Manager. First-party cookies not enabled: turn them on in the pixel's settings in Events Manager.
- Event name/type is empty or invalid: the event in your code is blank or isn't one TikTok supports. Compare it letter by letter with TikTok's standard event names.
- Value parameter format invalid: value must be a number above 0, like 100 or 12.34, with no currency symbols, letters or commas.
- Currency/Value parameter missing: the event sent value without currency, or currency without value. Currency code invalid means the code isn't one TikTok supports.
- Missing content ID parameter or Content ID value missing: the product ID wasn't sent, or was sent empty. Content Type invalid: content_type must be product or product_group.
- Email or phone number format invalid: emails should be lowercase and phone numbers in E.164 format. These only matter if you use Advanced Matching.
Missing value parameter: what value-based optimization needs
Value and currency matter most if you optimize for return on ad spend. TikTok's parameter reference lists what each setup needs:
- value: the total order price, sent as a number. Required for ROAS and Value-Based Optimization (VBO).
- price: the price of a single item. Also listed for ROAS and VBO.
- currency: a supported ISO currency code such as USD, EUR or GBP. Required for ROAS. Pixel Helper flags any event that sends value without currency.
- content_ids or contents: the product IDs. Required for Video Shopping Ads. TikTok recommends they match the sku_id or item_group_id in your catalog. The field is content_ids, plural, even when you send one ID.
- content_type: product or product_group. Also required for Video Shopping Ads.
Event names: CompletePayment is now Purchase
TikTok updated its standard events in 2025 (from May 1, 2025 for web). Old names keep working, but new setups should use the new ones.
- CompletePayment was renamed Purchase. TikTok converts the old name on its side, so you don't have to rename anything in your code.
- SubmitForm was renamed Lead and is handled the same way.
- PlaceAnOrder and ClickButton are soft-deprecated. They're fully supported until 2027, but TikTok recommends other events for new setups, and historical data can't be moved over to the new events.
- If you're writing new code, use Purchase for a completed order, not CompletePayment or PlaceAnOrder.
Check Test Events and Diagnostics in Events Manager
- In TikTok Ads Manager, open Events Manager and click your pixel under Datasets overview. Each pixel has Overview, Test Events and Diagnostics tabs.
- Test Events: open your website from the tab, either directly in your browser or as it would appear inside the TikTok app, then do the actions and watch the events arrive. You can filter between browser and server test events.
- Diagnostics: lists each issue with its severity and the ads it affects. Click Learn more for the fix and sample events. A number next to the tab means there are active issues.
- Overview: each event shows Active if TikTok received it in the last 7 days, or No recent activity if not, plus whether it came from the browser, the server or both.
- Dashboard data isn't real time. TikTok says it can take up to 24 hours, sometimes a little more, for events to appear. Use Test Events when you need to see them right away.
When the event isn't active for your campaign
If an ad group can't use the event you want to optimize for, TikTok suggests checking these:
- The event has to happen on your live site. Actions in the Test Events tab don't count, so place a real order, using a 100% discount code or a test card if your store has one.
- Confirm the event fires with Pixel Helper.
- In the ad group, check that you selected the right pixel.
- The optimization event should say Active in Events Manager. Give it time to show up, since data can lag by a day.
Shopify, server events and what a browser check can't see
- On Shopify, you can connect the pixel through the TikTok App on Shopify and pick a data sharing level. Standard uses the TikTok Pixel only. Enhanced adds the Events API and Advanced Matching. Maximum also adds Shopify APIs and In-App Shopify Checkout, which is in beta.
- Events API events go from a server to TikTok, not through the browser, so Pixel Helper won't show them. Use the server filter in Test Events and the connection method on the Overview tab to check them.
- Meta works the same way, with the browser pixel and Conversions API side by side. See how to check your Meta Pixel is working.
- Pixel Audit runs the browser side of this check from our servers: it opens your store, goes through home, product, cart and checkout, and reports what TikTok and seven other tags sent, including missing, duplicate or misplaced events and wrong parameters. It doesn't place orders and can't see Events API events. The problem list is free.
Check product, cart and checkout pages for TikTok and seven other tags in one run, without installing anything.
Questions
- Why is my TikTok Pixel not working?
- Start with TikTok Pixel Helper with your ad blocker off. It tells you whether the problem is the pixel code, an event or a parameter, and suggests a fix for each.
- What does missing value parameter mean on TikTok?
- An event reached TikTok without value, or with value but no currency. Value is required for ROAS and value-based optimization, so send it as a plain number with a supported currency code.
- Should I use CompletePayment or Purchase for TikTok?
- Use Purchase for new setups. TikTok renamed CompletePayment to Purchase in 2025, and existing CompletePayment events keep working without code changes.
- Why don't my TikTok events show up in Ads Manager?
- Event data isn't real time and can take up to 24 hours to appear. For an instant check, use the Test Events tab in Events Manager or Pixel Helper.
